Snowy Day in NYC

Yesterday is snowed all morning in New York City, and honestly it was so magical. It hasn’t really snowed all year near me in Virginia so it was nice to be able to walk around in the snow for a few hours. Fortunately for us, it never really stuck to the sidewalks and roads. The temperature however, dropped from 50 the day before to a crisp 31. We didn’t want to wander around in the show freezing all morning so we stopped off at the Natural History Museum and it was so incredible. I was secretly waiting for the exhibits to come to life (lol movie reference) but either way, the museum was great.

I had planned for it to be very snowy yesterday morning so I packed a warmer outfit. Yesterday I wore a pair of black pixie pants from J.Crew and a white “perfect fit” button down from J.Crew as well. I layered the button down with a leather pocket sweater from J.Crew Factory. It was a sweater from a few seasons back so sadly you can’t purchase it anymore. For shoes, I wore a pair of leather Chelsea boots that matched the pockets on the sweater. Everything that you can still purchase is linked below!!

Scotty Dogs & Turtlenecks

The turtleneck trend has been a favorite of mine this season. I have always loved wearing turtlenecks because I feel I can pull them off but I also love layering…my two favorite trends all in one. I wanted to experiment a little bit more with one of my favorite sweaters from J.Crew that I purchased 4 years ago. I was still pretty short when I bought it and still hadn’t grown into my body yet so I purchased an XXS (bad move, Lucy). The sweater itself fits pretty snug but it works, the sleeves however are an entirely different story. I tried layering the turtleneck underneath anyways where I was trying on outfit possibilities and I ended up loving how the stripes peek out towards the bottom of the sleeves. Shop the look below!

Back to School with Scout

It’s time to head back to school. Even though I have been back for a week now, it was only syllabus week making the work not too difficult. Now it’s time to buckle down to work because syllabus week is over and the real school work starts today.

I have teamed up with Scout by Bungalow on today’s outfit of the day post. I have been a huge fan of Scout for as long as I can remember. All of the girls in my elementary and middle school had Scout bags or lunch boxes and so did I. In the beginning of my college career I was using my Madeline and Company backpack (which I still adore😍) but when I’m in the need for something a little more compact, I immediately grab for my Scout Big Draw backpack in Checkered Past. I want something that was compact but stood out. This backpack accomplished both on my checklist. I’m a sucker for anything gingham and when I saw this on their website I knew I had to have it! To go with my backpack I also use the Packin Heat bag in Checkered Past. It’s originally meant as a cosmetic bag but I keep all of my cables and chargers in it. With my Packin Heat bag, I can keep my computer charger, phone charger, Beats, earbuds, and classroom clicker in one convenient spot.

A New Way to Layer

I love to find new ways to style closet staples and I have been really fascinated by staying button ups. Instead of layering them underneath a sweater, I have recently been placing sweaters and classic tees underneath of button ups and flannels. I love the classic but fresh look that it brings to any outfit.

I tried a new style today by wearing a classic boatneck J.Crew tee today, then adding a blue oxford button down overtop and cuffing the sleeves “J.Crew Style”. For an extra layer I placed my J.Crew Factory puffer vest overtop in the color Marine Salt. Everything is linked below for your shopping enjoyment!

All in J.Crew

I spent all of break shopping J.Crew and J.Crew Factory. I love shopping both stores because not only can you purchase virtually everything your closet needs, but you can buy almost everything on sale. I never spend full price at J.Crew because there are always great deals and promotions going on. I put together a cozy yet completely affordable and stylish outfit together the other day and I couldn’t wait to share it with everyone!

How to Build Your Closet: Winter Edition

One of the most frequent questions I am asked is what to purchase if you are just staring off your preppy wardrobe. My first piece of advice when people ask this question is to purchase the staples first and try not to spend a lot of money. You can look like a thousand bucks without spending a thousand bucks. I also often say to purchase things that you can wear a thousand different ways. It’s always a smart idea to start off a new closet by purchasing items that you can wear with one another and style for different occasions. Below are my suggestions of things to buy then you’re starting out your preppy closet.

Bottoms — For bottoms, I usually wear only a few things during the wintertime. I stick with a trusty pair of medium-dark wash skinny jeans, a navy skirt, and a fun wool printed skirt. I keep the print subtle and classy; it’s usually houndstooth or plaid.
Sweaters — I love to stock up on sweaters when they go on sale after Christmas and in the summertime. The best sweaters, I find, come from J.Crew and L.L. Bean. The J.Crew Tippi sweater is perfect for layering because it’s lightweight but very warm. It comes in a crazy amount of colors and you can monogram it! The L.L. Bean fisherman sweaters are a must-have for winter as well. They’re so thick and comfortable. Finally, I love to have at least one fair isle sweater in my closet because they’re festive and fun for skiing and the holidays.
Button Ups — I love button ups for every season but in the winter they really do add that extra layer of warmth. You can never go wrong sticking to classic oxford blue and a perfect crisp white oxford. If you want to add a little texture a KJP Cozy Cabin Flannel or a Scalloped oxford from KJP would spice up any layered look.
Vests — Stick with classic colors for vests when you first start out building your wardrobe. Once you get the necessities, add a little character to your vests. I love the J.Crew Factory herringbone vest and the J.Crew Factory blue and white gingham vest too!
Shoes — For shoes in the wintertime I always find myself coming back to these three pairs of shoes. My leopard print loafers, classic leather loafers, and L.L. Bean Boots. I also think it’s a good idea to invest in some Hunter wellies and a pair of black pumps.
Tops — You can’t wear button downs all of the time and when you’re not I suggest grabbing a striped boatneck from J.Crew. These tops are inexpensive and come in so many colors! I love pairing them with a pair of jeans, loafers or flats, and a vest and you’re out the door. If you want to really spice things up, go for a striped turtleneck tee. These are great for layering under sweaters and dresses along with wearing them on their own. You can find these for $10 at Target too!
When it comes to shopping for your wardrobe essentials is that when you shop at stores such as J.Crew, items tend to go on sale often — especially if you’re shopping J.Crew Factory. The best advice I can give to those who are trying to grown their closet it to sign up for emails from J.Crew and Factory. There are sales going on almost always at either of the two stores. Just keep an eye on your email and you can usually come up with an additional 40% off clearance or 50% off of your entire purchase.
Another tip is that you can find some great steals in the clearance section of J.Crew Factory. They usually have up for 16 pages of sale and the store usually adds an additional percentage off the sale.
Watch — I love the classic look of a Daniel Wellington watch. If you are looking for something a little girlier, try the Metro watches from Kate Spade!
Headband — For any girl who wants to channel her inner Blair Walforf (me!), try out fun headbands. The tartan headband is so classic and fun and as always, bows on the right!
Necklaces — I wear my Simply Pearlfection necklace from Kiel James Patrick every single day. It’s the perfect length to peek out of button downs or over boatneck tees. If you want to get a little fancier, try a long pearl necklace with a satin ribbon instead of a clasp!
Rings — I only wear two rings: my KJP rope bow ring and my Kate Spade bow ring. I love how delicate these two gems look on my hands and how the golds compliment each other.
Earrings — Pearls all the way. If you want to mix it up, try the Kate Spade tortoise shell square studs.
Bracelets — Once again, I love the way KJP bracelets are made and how they fit. I love my monogrammed Atlantic Pearl Bracelet in Pearls on Champagne.

Bundled Up in Black & White

I spent the afternoon in Downtown Richmond the other day with Kirsten and we popped into the Jefferson Hotel to check out the Christmas decorations. The Jefferson is a historical location in RVA and is a must see during Christmas time. While there we saw their amazing gingerbread sleigh, the iconic lobby Christmas tree and the traditional Nutcrackers that guard the doors.
Over my outfit I wore this fun black and white houndstooth trench coat from Charlotte Russe. I was purchased from a consignment shops years ago by my sister, Leslie, and now I cannot hunt anything similar down. I also wore some fun sheer polka dot tights and my Jessica Simpson pumps. I linked similar items below!
